Με όπλο -πλέον- το Xenios και την τεχνογνωσία που αποκομίσαμε από την υλοποίηση του, βάζουμε στο τραπέζι νέες ιδέες, σχεδιάζουμε νέες εφαρμογές κι επεκτάσεις του συστήματος και ξεκινάμε ένα νέο ερευνητικό ταξίδι.

Στην Creative People χρησιμοποιώντας τη δημιουργικότητα μας, βάζουμε ο καθένας μας κι από ένα λιθαράκι στα οικοδομήματα πληροφορικής που σχεδιάζουμε, υλοποιούμε κι υποστηρίζουμε.

Σκέφτομαι και δημιουργώ, ερευνώ και καινοτομώ, αυτό κάνουμε στην Creative People και ενώνουμε τις δυνάμεις μας με άλλους φορείς, δημόσιους και ιδιωτικούς στην προσπάθεια μας για ένα καλύτερο αύριο για τη χώρα.

Τι είναι το σύστημα Xenios και σε ποιους απευθύνεται;

Τι κάνει το σύστημα Xenios;

Το ερευνητικό έργο Xenios – Συνδυασμένη πλατφόρμα εφαρμογών προστασίας και προβολής πολιτιστικών και τουριστικών χώρων (xenios-project.eu) φθάνει στην ολοκλήρωσή του. To Xenios, έχοντας αξιοποιήσει τεχνολογία αιχμής, ανέπτυξε μια καινοτόμα προσέγγιση με στόχο:

• την έγκαιρη ενημέρωση των αρμόδιων φορέων διαχείρισης των χώρων αρχαιολογικού, τουριστικού και φυσιολατρικού ενδιαφέροντος για επερχόμενους φυσικούς κινδύνους
• τη βελτίωση της ασφάλειας των επισκεπτών και την ενίσχυση της προβολής των χώρων αυτών

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, στο πλαίσιο του έργου αναπτύχθηκε η πλατφόρμα Xenios για την πρόβλεψη, παρακολούθηση  και αξιολόγηση της εμφάνισης φυσικών κινδύνων στους παραπάνω χώρους, η οποία μέσω της εφαρμογής κινητού Xenios έχει την δυνατότητα να μεταφέρει μηνύματα προειδοποίησης και οδηγίες απομάκρυνσης των επισκεπτών, όταν κρίνεται απαραίτητο. Η πλατφόρμα και η εφαρμογή Xenios επιδείχθηκαν με επιτυχία στις δύο πιλοτικές περιοχές του έργου, τον Εθνικό Δρυμό Σαμαριάς και τον Αρχαιολογικό χώρο στο Δίον Πιερίας, εντός του 2021.

Η συνολική προσέγγιση του έργου, τα τεχνολογικά εργαλεία που αναπτύχθηκαν, τα αποτελέσματα των πιλοτικών επιδείξεων, καθώς και ο σχεδιασμός μελλοντικής αξιοποίησής τους, θα παρουσιαστούν στην τελική ημερίδα του έργου που θα διεξαχθεί τη Δευτέρα 11 Απριλίου 2022, στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Η ημερίδα θα έχει υβριδική μορφή επιτρέποντας και διαδικτυακή παρακολούθηση, καθώς, λόγω των υγειονομικών κανονισμών, υπάρχει περιορισμός του αριθμού των ατόμων που μπορούν να παραστούν με φυσική παρουσία.. Η παρακολούθηση θα είναι ελεύθερη για όσους ενδιαφέρονται, μετά από εγγραφή τους στη φόρμα που διατίθεται στον σύνδεσμο forms.gle, όπου δηλώνεται η προτίμηση για φυσική παρουσία ή διαδικτυακή παρακολούθηση. Για τους πρώτους θα τηρηθούν όλα τα προβλεπόμενα υγειονομικά πρωτόκολλα.

Οι δηλώσεις για φυσική παρουσία θα είναι δεκτές μέχρι την Πέμπτη 10/03/2022 και θα τηρηθεί σειρά προτεραιότητας μέχρι να συμπληρωθεί το όριο. Όσοι θα είναι πέραν του ορίου θα ενημερωθούν εγκαίρως και θα μπορούν να παρακολουθήσουν την ημερίδα διαδικτυακά. Η δυνατότητα δήλωσης για διαδικτυακή παρακολούθηση θα διατηρηθεί έως την Παρασκευή 07/04/2022, οπότε θα σταλεί σε όλους τους εγγεγραμμένους και ο σχετικός σύνδεσμος για τη σύνδεση.

H ερευνητική ομάδα του έργου Xenios, μετά τη δεύτερη πιλοτική εφαρμογή του έργου στο φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς, συμμετείχε σε μια ενημερωτική ημερίδα, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Μεσογειακό Αγρονομικό Ινστιτούτο Χανίων (MAIX), την Δευτέρα 11 Οκτωβρίου 2021.

Τόσο στο πεδίο, όσο και στην παρουσίαση του έργου στην ενημερωτική ημερίδα, οι τελικοί χρήστες είχαν την δυνατότητα να δουν στην πράξη τις υπηρεσίες, που έχουν αναπτυχθεί σε ερευνητικό επίπεδο, τόσο για το Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς, όσο και για το Αρχαιολογικό Πάρκο του Δίου Πιερίας.

Οι υπηρεσίες που παρέχονται από την πλατφόρμα Xenios στους διαχειριστές των χώρων, όπως η συνεχής καταγραφή του αριθμού των επισκεπτών που βρίσκονται στο χώρο, μέσω του συστήματος έκδοσης εισιτηρίων (ticketing system) και η καταγραφή της διασποράς στο χώρο, καθώς και η δυνατότητα αμφίδρομης επικοινωνίας με τους επισκέπτες, μέσω του κέντρου επικοινωνίας (call center), είναι μερικά μόνο από τα πολύτιμα εργαλεία στα χέρια των διαχειριστών ανοικτών, αλλά και κλειστών χώρων που υποδέχονται επισκέπτες.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το να γνωρίζουμε ανά πάσα στιγμή, πόσος κόσμος βρίσκεται μέσα στο φαράγγι και να έχουμε μια ενδεικτική εικόνα της διασποράς του, βοηθά σημαντικά την καθημερινότητα των ανθρώπων που εργάζονται σε αυτό κι έχουν τη βαριά ευθύνη να ελέγχουν καθημερινά, εάν όλοι οι επισκέπτες έχουν βγει από το χώρο του φαραγγιού την κατάλληλη ώρα.

Επιπλέον, η έγκαιρη ενημέρωση των διαχειριστών του χώρου για πιθανή εκδήλωση φαινομένων, που θα μπορούσαν να προκαλέσουν καταστροφές και να θέσουν σε κίνδυνο τους επισκέπτες του χώρου και το προσωπικό, η οποία επίσης παρέχεται από την πλατφόρμα Xenios, είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική για ένα χώρο σαν το φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς.

Τέλος, η εφαρμογή κινητού, που έχει επίσης αναπτυχθεί στο πλαίσιο του έργου, εκτός από το πολύ ενδιαφέρον  τουριστικό περιεχόμενο που παρέχει στους επισκέπτες, παρέχει και την ιδιαίτερα σημαντική υπηρεσία της άμεσης και σε πραγματικό χρόνο επικοινωνίας του επισκέπτη με τους διαχειριστές σε περίπτωση ανάγκης. Στο χώρο του φαραγγιού, λόγω του ιδιαίτερου ανάγλυφου, πολύ συχνά μπορεί κάποιος από τους επισκέπτες να τραυματιστεί ή να αντιμετωπίσει κάποιο πρόβλημα, που να απαιτεί άμεση βοήθεια. Αν το περιστατικό αυτό δεν συμβεί κοντά σε κάποιο φυλάκιο, ώστε να ειδοποιηθεί σύντομα ένας φύλακας,  είναι πολύ δύσκολο το περιστατικό να αντιμετωπιστεί στο χρόνο που απαιτείται. Αν όμως ο επισκέπτης έχει την δυνατότητα με το δικό του κινητό, να ειδοποιήσει το κέντρο διαχείρισης και να αναφέρει το πρόβλημα, δίνει στο προσωπικό του φαραγγιού την δυνατότητα να αντιμετωπίσει άμεσα και με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο το κάθε περιστατικό.

Our first Xenios scientific paper is published on MDPI.

The paper title is “Development of an Early Warning and Incident Response System for the Protection of Visitors from Natural Hazards in Important Outdoor Sites in Greece”.

This paper presents Xenios, a system under development in Greece that provides early warning and risk communication services via web-based and mobile phone applications. The system is built around a modular architecture that permits the easy integration of new subsystems or other danger forecasting modules, depending on the site’s actual needs and limitations. Xenios also provides a mobile app for site visitors, which establishes a communication link for sending alarms, but also serves them with useful tourist information.

Within the Xenios Research project we faced the issue of counting visitors’ entry and exit as there is no ticketing system infrastructure, while we needed to know how many visitors are in the site at any given time and especially during an emergency.

 

The concept

Stick a barcode on the back of the ticket, scan the ticket, add, or remove “one” depending on whether you are on the entrance or the exit. Data to add or remove are posted on the Xenios platform.

What is this?
A custom portable barcode scanner.

Where is it going to be used?
In archeological sites, such as Dion in Pieria and Samaria in Crete, during the Xenios project implementation, in order to contribute to a valid ticket counting result.

How does it work?
Connected to the internet over a Wi-Fi network connection it posts tickets data to the Xenios platform, to count a valid result regarding the number of people inside an archeological site.

As part of the XENIOS project, the Creative People team visited the archeological park in Dion in June 2020. More specifically from June 15th to June 19th of 2020. The purpose of the visit was to study the wireless network coverage needs in the park and to identify particularities of the site that could adversely affect communication between the site and the XENIOS system.

The following article is part of the test timeline planned and carried out during our visit to Dion with a view to achieving communication of network equipment in the field.

The main problems we faced were the dense high vegetation and the lack of visual contact between points, either because of vegetation, or because of soil unevenness. These problems were addressed and resolved on a case-by-case basis and are mentioned below.

The flora of the region varies by season. The density and color of the foliage, humidity and temperature vary during the year and certainly affect the yield of the coverage. In our study we have taken into consideration the greater range of these variables, with a view to approach the most ideal interconnection and topology of equipment available in the field.

The lack of power-outlet points in the field was a particular difficulty we had to take into account. This is why we designed and deployed mobile 12/24VDC rechargeable power supply units, built in Creative People, in accordance with safety standards, to avoid any risk to the environment or to equipment operators.

The only factor that we have not been able to simulate in the study is human interference in the morphology of the site (landscaping works, future structures, etc.).

 

Tests timeline

Our arrival to the archeological park, was followed by a field inspection to the site, aiming to the understanding of its geomorphologic specificities, as well as of noting down other factors, which we should consider when performing the tests.

The park is divided into two parts, the first part is the site of the Sanctuaries and the second part is the site of the Ancient City. As displayed on map 1.2, the site of The Sanctuaries’ site is outlined in green and the site of The Ancient City in red. In addition, a full walk of the site is shown in yellow on map 1.2. Its length is 7.3 km, and it takes about 2 hours of fast continuous walking to cover it.

Sites of Archeological Interest

In the Archeological Park the total number of sites of archeological interest is quite large. For this study, we selected the most visited sites, based on information received from the Archeological Park staff.

 

As main points of interest (see map 1.2) were designated:

The Hellenistic Theater, the Roman Theater, the Sanctuary of Aspelpius, the Thermal Baths, the Sanctuary of Demetra, the Sanctuary of Zeus, the Sanctuary of Isis, the Conservatory, the Great Thermal Baths, and the Villa of Dionysus.

The site’s morphology offers a variety of tour combinations, as there is no specific tour path.

We have therefore chosen a 4.2 km route, covering most of the Sanctuary, as well as part of the Ancient City site, including the Conservatory, the Great Thermal baths and part of the southern Wall.

Most of the area has increased humidity and even on the warm days of June, the soil in several places is still wet.

The vegetation is particularly high, especially between the Sanctuary of Demetra and the Roman Theater. The average height of the tree vegetation is over 15 meters (and at some points it is far higher) while the foliage is particularly dense.

On the following map 1.3, blue color depicts the route for which the coverage study was carried out.

Interconnection tests Entrance – Sanctuary of Isis

On the second day, the first interconnection test was performed between the base and the eastern point of the Isis Sanctuary.

The two points cannot be interconnected. The problem is the dense vegetation, which interferes between the 110 meters distance of the two points.

 

Interconnection tests Entrance — Thermal Baths

A test was then performed between an ENTRANCE and a point in front of the Thermal Baths.

The distance between the two points -in an imaginable line- is 345 meters. The interconnection between ENTRANCE and Thermal Baths was successful and did not pose any problems. The coverage performance, as well as the interconnection quality of the two points, was maintained constantly throughout the tests.

 

Interconnection tests ENTRANCE – Outhouse near Sanctuary of Asclepius

The third interconnection between point A (ENTRANCE) and the outhouse near the Sanctuary of Asclepius was successfully established. The distance between the two points in -an imaginable straight line- is 250 meters and very few trees are interfering between them, which does not affect their stable interconnection.

The interconnection quality and coverage performance between point A (ENTRANCE) and the outhouse remained constant throughout the tests.

 

Interconnection tests ENTRANCE – Mobile Point at Demetra Sanctuary area

In this particular case, we have logged interconnection quality measurements of the mobile point in a wide area relative to the base at various points, in order to achieve its optimal placing.

The quality of interconnection and coverage of this point was studied in detail. The reason is that this point will also take over the relay-interconnection with a transmitter, which will be placed on a platform, located at the Sanctuary of Zeus, next to the bridge destroyed by flooding, covering the area of the Isis Sanctuary and the Zeus Sanctuary.

Extensive testing was carried out at selection points to identify the most ideal ones. Tests were then carried out, with varying mast heights at both points, mainly to avoid interference from visitors’ passage, until the desired level of interconnection and coverage was achieved.

 

Interconnection tests between The Sanctuary of Demetra – Transmitter at The Sanctuary of Zeus and Sanctuary of Isis

The distance between the points is 149 meters with altitude difference. The interconnection has been established and is stable with satisfactory performance. The coverage is quite good in both areas, Sanctuary of Zeus and Sanctuary of Isis.

A serious factor we should take into consideration is the vegetation variations in the site, either during the year due to changes in meteorological conditions, or due to human intervention, which are intended to clean up and ensure the safety of the site.

With quite a large amount of data collected on day 2, we can now determine the final points at which the equipment will be temporarily installed for the testing and pilot of XENIOS.

The ISP (Internet Service Provider) line capability at the site of Dion does not exceed 3Mbps Download and 0.6Mbps Upload, making it very difficult to correctly transmit data to XENIOS’s Cloud platform, let alone provide free wireless network access to the internet for visitors. This issue will be partly resolved by using additional 4G LTE equipment installed for testing purposes.

 

Interconnection tests ENTRANCE — Conservatory

The next area to test coverage selected was the Conservatory, where the Wall and the Ancient City begin.

This is the last test point, which is 235 meters away -in an imaginable straight line- from the ENTRANCE.

The interconnection was successful and stable. The coverage quality is very satisfactory and is benefiting from the open field, which extends north-east of the Conservatory, as well as from the elevation advantage.

 

Installation of equipment at final locations – Coverage Tests

On the morning of the 3rd day at the site, we met with the Archeological’ s Park archeologist in charge, and we were guided around the area of the Sanctuaries and part of the Ancient City. We were pointed out which are the points of the highest danger, and we discussed whether or not they can be covered.

Equipment has been installed at the optimal locations selected (see map 1.5) and put into fully operational mode, in order to perform a test, simulating a visitor on various points.

For this test, a random path has been chosen in the predefined areas by making small stops near points of interest and using mobile devices to simulate a visitor tour in the area.

Along the way (see Map 1.5), several disconnection-reconnect tests were performed on the XENIOS network. These tests were performed as many mobile devices are known to disconnect from wireless networks (Wi-Fi) during a phone call. Indicatively, the reconnection to the XENIOS network from a mobile device running Android 10.9, takes place in less than 6 seconds, having selected the automatic connection to the XENIOS network.

The total distance, walking in the site for this trial, exceeded 5 km.

During the 3rd day tests, the weather was mild rainy for about an hour. Stability and quality of coverage were not affected.

During the field tests we noticed that the coverage between the bridge and the platform at the path near the Sanctuary of Isis is unstable, due to elevation difference combined with dense vegetation that surrounds the site.

 

Reoccurring equipment boot tests

The equipment has been put into fully operational mode for a repetition of the test.

The measurements confirmed the data, collected on day 3, involving stability between interconnected points and coverage quality. In addition, connection tests have been performed on the XENIOS network with different mobile devices (mobile phones and laptops) to confirm that there is no great discrepancy between devices and measurements.

Due to very low ground connection speed provided by the ISP at the site of the Archeological Park, 4G LTE equipment was tested to establish a more stable and rapid connection between the equipment and the Xenios Cloud Platform.

Following the test equipment interconnection with the XENIOS platform, indicative data collection and dispatch tests between equipment and platform were performed. Furthermore, the visitors ticketing system (ENTRANCE – EXIT) were tested and data was sent successfully to the XENIOS system.

Upon the end of the interconnection tests, a final backup of the configuration along with the exact locations of the equipment involved were performed.

During the implementation of the XENIOS research project, the Creative People team visited Chania, in order to gather site information, since the Samaria Gorge is one of the two pilot areas for implementing the XENIOS system.

The visit lasted 3 days – 2 nights and took place in the period 29/10/2018 -31/10/2018, during which meetings were held with various agencies related to the Samaria Gorge . During their visit, the Creative People team  also had to cross the gorge, in order to perform a field survey and the operational needs for the XENIOS system design and implementation.

The visit would not have been successful without the valuable help of the Samaria – West Crete National Park Management Agency, partners in the “XENIOS” program .

During the 1st day of the visit, meetings were held with the gorge management, as well as with Fire Brigade officials, who are in charge of coordinating the site evacuation actions in the case of an emergency.

The purpose of this article is to present the results of crossing the gorge in a nutshell without further discussion or comments on the results of the above meetings.

Crossing the Samaria Gorge

The day began with the pickup of the Creative People team by executives of the Forest Management Agency, from the hotel and transfer them to the entrance of the gorge at “Xyloskalo”, where the entrance of the Forest is located.

Upon arrival, a meeting was held with the staff of the outpost to gather information about the visitors entry process, as well as the needs that they would like the XENIOS system to cover.

Each ticket consists of 3 sections, of which the 1st is cut off at the entrance of the gorge, the 2nd is cut off at the exit, while the 3rd part is kept by the visitor as a souvenir of the visit.

Free entrance to the gorge is allowed for children under 15 years, people serving the armed forces, people with special needs, escort groups, but following the pre-determined procedure for issuing and canceling their zero value tickets. This is particularly important as one of the main questions XENIOS has to respond in real time, is how many people are in the gorge now.

Tickets issued are numbered by the Ministry of Environment-Energy and Climate Change (Chania Forest Directorate) and are counted only at certain times during the day, without any computerized entry-exit system for visitors. Approaching the question “How many people are in the gorge now” from the number of existing tickets is a problematic solution as it’s not realtime. Another approach should be followed as Xenios system needs to calculate the exact number of hikers crossing the gorge.

It makes perfect sense that the count of tickets in the entrance should be exactly the same on the exit. At this point, we must mention that the gorge consists of 2 possible “gates” (“Xyloskalo” and “Agya Roumeli”), which both function as entrances and as exits depending on the route the visitor chooses (and his stamina, above all as taking the route from Agya Roumeli to Xyloskalo is a steep uphill route).

Therefore, the possible routes that the visitor can follow are:

After the meeting with the gorge staff, the crossing of the gorge began guided by a person of the gorge management team. Throughout the crossing, the instructions and information received by the gorge team, both for the nature and for the historical part of the Forest, made the route much more interesting and enjoyable.

All along the way, the Creative People team carried out measurements and tests related to the implementation of the XENIOS system and more specifically related to telephone coverage, GPS signal, internet access, as well as points worth mentioning in their report.

Telephone coverage
As a result of these tests, we can mention that after the first 500 meters there is no telephone coverage (from any mobile phone provider), except from point on the 1st km – at a very specific point- and the bridge at the outpost of the old settlement which is located at the 7th km, once again at a very specific point.

GPS signal
GPS signal is available when accessing the Forest, before entering the gorge. Inside the gorge there is no GPS signal coverage from a smart phone device (Trimble and Garmin devices have but we were investigating the case of ordinary visitors having smartphones), not to neglect no telephone and no internet access. The GPS signal returns just before the gorge exit in “Agya Roumeli”.

Crossing the gorge took 6 ½ hours, time that was consider to be at least decent, if you consider that the Creative People team members are only training their fingers – through frequent repetitions and sets – using keyboards- and exercise their lower jaw muscles for coffee and water intake, to keep their mind alert.

Leaving the gorge, the journey continued -this time by boat- and the team was transferred from Agya Roumeli to the port of Sfakia, where the other members of the organization were waiting by vehicle, for the pickup and transfer of the team to the hotel.

Crossing the gorge of Samaria is undoubtedly in the list of things that one must do when visiting Crete and especially the prefecture of Chania.

The breathtaking scenery and the chance to be close to the “wild beasts” or “Cretan wild goat”, also known as “kri- Kri”, compensate the hiker’s fatigue.

Xenios partners have developed services for the short, medium, and long-term forecast of extreme natural phenomena and natural disasters in sites of tourist and cultural interest, which are also vulnerable to natural hazards. The ultimate objective is to contribute towards a more effective management and mitigation of these risks.

In addition, the project enhances safety and improves the tourism product at these sites, through a mobile app which will offer visitors prompt and reliable information.
